Intestacy / Dying Intestate
Dying intestate means dying without a valid will. The law then decides who gets your assets — according to a formula that applies to everyone regardless of your wishes. Common problems: common-law partners may receive nothing, stepchildren may receive nothing, friends and charities receive nothing, and the division may not reflect what you wanted. A will fixes all of this.
In short
Dying without a will means the law decides who gets everything — and it may be very different from your wishes. A will lets you decide instead.
