Lasting Power of Attorney

A Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) is the UK version of a durable power of attorney. Two types: Property and Financial Affairs LPA, and Health and Welfare LPA. Critical: an LPA must be registered before you lose mental capacity. Once capacity is lost, it is too late. Without an LPA, your family may need to apply to the Court of Protection — a process that takes months and costs thousands of pounds.

In short

An LPA gives someone authority to manage your finances or health decisions in the UK. It must be set up before you lose mental capacity — after that, it is too late.
